The city of Shawnee, Oklahoma, is asking four tribes to collect taxes on the sale of goods to non-Indians.

A letter went to the Absentee Shawnee Tribe, the Citizen Potawatomi Nation, the Kickapoo Tribe and the Sac and Fox Nation on Tuesday, The Shawnee News-Star reported. The city wants to enter into agreements for the 3-percent sales tax.

“We appreciate the economic development the Tribal Nations have brought to Shawnee and value the interactions we have with them,” Mayor Wes Mainord said in the letter, the paper reported. “But we are depending upon sales tax receipts for the operation of our community. Those operations provide essential services to the Tribal Nations and their members who have businesses and reside in Shawnee.”
