Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes enter buyback deal

The Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes of Montana signed a cooperative agreement today as part of the Land Buy-Back Program for Tribal Nations.

Chairman Ronald Trahan and Interior Secretary Sally Jewell signed the agreement at Interior Department headquarters in Washington, D.C. Audio of the ceremony can be found on the Indianz.Com SoundCloud.

The agreement will facilitate purchases of highly fractionated interests on the Flathead Reservation. Any land that is acquired will be returned to the tribe. The $3.4 billion Cobell settlement authorized $1.9 billion for the land consolidation program. The first offers were made last month.
