The Oglala Sioux Tribe of South Dakota could be the first in Indian Country to develop its own digital currency.

The MazaCoin is an exercise of the tribe's sovereignty, a spokesperson said. The currency, which is based on the Bitcoin, could stimulate the economy on the Pine Ridge Reservation and in nearby communities.

"We're estimating the initial price on the going market of $1.25, which gives us a $2 billion market capitalization," spokesperson Payu Harris said at a meeting in Rapid City, KOTA Radio reported.

Harris is leading the BTC Oyate Project to promote the new currency.
