Navajo Nation continues work on lease for coal power plant

Navajo Nation leaders are still working on a lease extension for a coal-fired power plant on the Arizona portion of the reservation.

The Navajo Nation Council approved a extension for the Navajo Generating Station that President Ben Shelly signed into law But Salt River Power, which operates the facility, has raised concerns about water rights, hiring preferences and the inclusion of the Interior Department as a party to the lease.

Navajo lawmakers are expected to go into a special session to consider the issues.
