Navajo Nation weighing purchase of coal mine in New Mexico

The Navajo Nation has until July 1 to decide whether to purchase a coal mine on the New Mexico portion of the reservation.

The asking price for the Navajo Mine is $85 million. BHP Billiton operates the facility on land leased from the tribe near Farmington.

The mine so far has generated $40 million for the tribe, President Ben Shelly said. Owning it outright could generate more revenues.

The Navajo Nation Council voted to create a limited liability corporation that would acquire the mine.
