Members of the
Aquinnah Wampanoag Tribe of Massachusetts will go to the polls on November 17 to elect a chairman.
Incumbent Cheryl Andrews-Maltais, 55, is running for re-election. She has led the tribe for six years.
“I believe the tribe has reached a maturity level that we haven’t reached before,” Andrews-Maltais told The Martha's Vineyard Gazette. “We’re at a moment where expansion of services is more critical than ever.”
Tobias Vanderhoop, 39, a former tribal administrator, is the challenger. He's calling for more transparency and change.
"“More diplomacy is needed,” Vanderhoop told the paper. “The key issue is inclusion of many voices and making sure that people are heard."
The chairman's term runs for three years.
