Ponca Tribe runs into opposition to land-into-trust application
Posted: Tuesday, November 5, 2013
The
Ponca Tribe of
Nebraska is seeing opposition to its land-into-trust application.
The tribe operates the White Eagle Express, a convenience store and gas station, in Bloomfield. The city is considering whether to oppose the application, due to taxation issues, The Norfolk Daily News reported.
Gov. Dave Heineman (R) won't be opposing the application but his office said he supports any appeals by the city or Knox County.
“This matter is primarily one centering upon local land use; therefore, I support any appeal that may be initiated by the City of Bloomfield, Nebraska, or by other relevant local authorities, regarding the use of property proposed for trust status for the provision of governmental services to these trust properties,” Heineman said in a letter to the
Bureau of Indian Affairs, the Daily News reported.
