City seeks meeting with Delaware Tribe over plans in Kansas

Officials in Lawrence, Kansas, voted to request a meeting with the Delaware Tribe of Oklahoma.

The tribe recently acquired 87 acres near Lawrence for housing, health, social service and other purposes. City officials want to get a better understanding of those plans.

“I don’t want people’s assumptions to start taking over. The last think I want to do is to tell a Native American tribe that they are not welcome in our community," City Commissioner Jeremy Farmer said at a public meeting, The Lawrence Journal-World reported.

The tribe plans to submit a land-into-trust application to the Bureau of Indian Affairs.
