Red Lake Nation observes 150th anniversary of historic treaty

The Red Lake Nation of Minnesota observed the 150th anniversary of the Old Crossing Treaty.

The treaty was signed on October 2, 1863. Tribal ancestors ceded 11 million acres to the United States.

"It’s a bitter pill to swallow, looking back at our own history," Chairman Floyd Jourdain said at a ceremony, The Bemidji Pioneer reported. "But it’s also a healing process."

The tribe will mark every October 2 as a holiday.
