Cherokee Nation teen heads to trial for school shooting plot





A young member of the Cherokee Nation of Oklahoma is going on trial for allegedly plotting a shooting at his high school.

Sammie Eaglebear Chavez, 19, is charged with planning, attempting or conspiring to perform an act of violence with the intention of causing serious bodily harm or death to other students. He allegedly told other students that he planned to bring guns and bombs to Bartlesville High School.

Chavez has been in custody since his arrest on December 14, 2012.That was the same day of a school shooting in Newtown, Connecticut.

Chavez has pleaded not guilty. Jury selection begins today.
