Navajo Nation Council approves bill to aid veterans housing

The Navajo Nation Council approved a bill aimed at improving housing conditions for the tribe's veterans.

Every year, the tribe deposits 4 percent of expected revenues into the Navajo Nation Veterans Trust Fund. Legislation No. 0193-13 changes the formula -- 2 percent to the trust and 2 percent to the Department of Navajo Veterans Affairs.

The bill allows the department to use the money to build houses for veterans and make repairs to existing homes. Any unused funds will be deposited back into the trust.

The tribe has more than 10,000 registered veterans but housing funds for them have dried up in recent year.
