Oneida Nation council member backs protest against R-word

An Oneida Nation leader is supporting an upcoming protest against Indian mascots even though the tribe isn't officially backing the event.

Indian people and Indian imagery shouldn't be used as mascots, council member Brandon Stevens said.

"We're educators, we're community members, we have families and go to work like everyone else," Stevens told The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. "Having those negative stereotypes takes us back 100 years."

The Wisconsin Indian Education Association is organizing the protest, which will take place this Sunday at a game between the Green Bay Packer and the team from Washington.
