Mashpee Wampanoag Tribe donates traditional canoe to NMAI

The
Mashpee Wampanoag Tribe
of Massachusetts is donating a traditional wood canoe to the
National Museum of the American Indian
.
The 16-foot-long mishoon was carved out of white pine. The wood itself was harvested using a traditional burning technique.
The entire process was filmed for a documentary that is also being donated to the NMAI. The boat will arrive at the
Cultural Resources Center
in Suitland, Maryland, tomorrow.
