The South Dakota Board of Geographic Names is considering new names for "Squaw Creek" in Moody County.
Possible suggestions include "Native Woman Creek." But board chairman J.R. LaPlante, a member of the Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe who serves as Secretary of Tribal Relations, said that's too generic.
LaPlante said "Eastman Creek" would be acceptable. Charles Eastman was a member of the Flandreau Santee Sioux Tribe who was one of the first Indian physicians.
The tribe plans to consult elders about other possible names for the creek.
