Blackfeet Nation axes oil and gas leases by sacred mountain

The Blackfeet Nation of Montana canceled oil and gas leases near a sacred mountain.

Tribal members in the U.S. and Blackfoot relatives in Canada expressed opposition after learning that development was possible near Chief Mountain. But the tribe said the leases were canceled due to non-payment from an energy company.

In any event, the tribe said development would have occurred about two miles from the mountain. A half-mile buffer zone protects the site.
