Gordon Belcourt, the longtime executive director of the Montana-Wyoming Tribal Leaders Council, died on Monday after an extended illness.
Belcourt was a member of the Blackfeet Nation. He helped the council emerge from bankruptcy and become a powerful voice for tribal interests.
“Gordon was a tremendous leader and advocate for Indian Country," Sen. Jon Tester (D-Montana) said in a press release. "A trusted and experienced voice, Gordon could always be counted on to use common-sense to get to the heart of the issue and find a solution. He leaves big shoes to fill, and he will be missed by all Montanans.”
Funeral services are scheduled for this Friday on the Blackfeet Nation. A rosary will be held Thursday.
