The Fort McDowell Yavapai Nation of Arizona continues to the mourn the death of its longtime leader Clinton Pattea.

Pattea died on July 5 at the age of 81. He served as president of his tribe for more than 40 years.

“He will be deeply missed by all who knew him. But, we at Fort McDowell will continue in his legacy of promoting education, preserving our native language, and maintaining our Tribal sovereignty and self-reliance,” Vice President Bernadine Burnette said in a statement.

The tribe recently named its tribal office as the Clinton M. Pattea Tribal Headquarters. A public memorial is due to be held in November.
