Dancers from Bermuda connect to tribal heritage at powwow
Posted: Monday, July 8, 2013
Dancers from Bermuda took part in the 92nd annual
Mashpee Wampanoag
Tribe powwow in Massachusetts.
Wampanoag ancestors were sold into slavery in Bermuda and the Caribbean following wars with Europeans in the 1600s. Their descendants have been reconnecting with their long-lost family on Cape Cod.
“It’s been almost like finding a missing piece of your history,” Nives Filice, the chairwoman of the St. David’s Islanders and Native Community, told The Boston Globe.
The powwow concluded on Sunday.
