Spirit Lake Nation voters remove Roger Yankton as chairman

Voters of the Spirit Lake Nation of North Dakota ousted Roger Yankton as chairman at a general council meeting today.

The vote to remove Yankton was 284-145, The Grand Forks Herald reported. Tribal members are now in the process of choosing a successor.

Critics accused Yankton of failing to respond to their concerns. They also say he refused to call a general council meeting.

Yankton also faced scrutiny due to child welfare woes on the reservation.
