Soldier from Blackfeet Nation was not killed in line of duty

A soldier from the Blackfeet Nation in Montana died last week but it wasn't in the line of duty as previously reported.

Chief Warrant Officer Lee James Williamson of the U.S. Army died in North Carolina after being treated for a long-term illness, his wife said.

The Blackfeet Veterans Office sent out a press release on Monday that said Williamson died in the line of duty but that was based on incorrect information, a tribal spokesperson said.

Williamson served 25 years in the Army and received 50 awards and commendations, including the Legion of Merit and three Bronze Service Medals, The Great Falls Tribune reported. He received three Meritorious Service Medals for his service in Kuwait, Afghanistan and Iraq.
