Three-year-old girl who died at Spirit Lake was in foster care

A three-year-old girl who died under mysterious circumstances on the Spirit Lake Nation in North Dakota had been in the foster care system, The Grand Forks Herald reports.

The girl died last Thursday at a home on the reservation. She apparently had been allowed to return to that home under a tribal court order, Sen. Heidi Heitkamp (D-North Dakota) said.

“This is front row-center until we get a personal assurance that kids are safe," Heitkamp told the paper.

The FBI and the Bureau of Indian Affairs are investigating the death but have declined to provide details.
