Southern Ute Tribe to expand oil shale drilling on reservation

The
Southern Ute Tribe
of Colorado will open 12,000 acres of its reservation to oil shale development.
Red Willow Production Company
, a tribal enterprise, drilled a test well last year and is planning to do some further work. The
Bureau of Indian Affairs
is conducting an environmental assessment of the proposed lease.
The reservation is part of the
Mancos Shale
formation.
