Spirit Lake Nation court orders new election for council seat

The Spirit Lake Nation of North Dakota will be holding a new election on June 11 to fill a contested tribal council seat.

Leander “Russ” McDonald won the Fort Totten District seat in a general election earlier this month. But incumbent Clarice Brownshield went to tribal court and won a decision for a new vote.

McDonald plans to run again. He had defeated Brownshield by more than 200 votes in the May 7 election.

"I don’t think I can let those guys down now," McDonald told The Jamestown Sun, referring to his supporters.
