Oglala Sioux Tribe ends grocery store lease after complaints

The Oglala Sioux Tribe of South Dakota has revoked the lease for the only large-sized grocery store on the Pine Ridge Reservation.

The store at the Sioux Nation Shopping Center was briefly closed a year ago this month after outdated meat was found on the shelves. The company's attorney said the problems were addressed but that was disputed by a tribal executive.

"Certain tribal council members received complaints of spoiled food being sold at the Sioux Nation Shopping Center," Lyle Jack, the tribe's economic development manager, told KELO-TV.

The store was told to vacate the building by August. When that happens, the nearest large-sized grocery store will be an estimated 90 miles away in Rapid City.
