The Cherokee Nation has joined a wind energy project with four other Oklahoma tribes.

The Cherokees will be working with the Kaw Nation, the Pawnee Nation, the Ponca Nation and the Otoe-Missouria Tribe on the project. The are planning to operate 90 wind turbines on two pieces of property, including one at the site of the former Chilocco Indian School.

“The Cherokee Nation is playing a significant role in creating new green jobs and expects to play a key role in Oklahoma's emerging wind energy industry,” Chief Bill John Baker said in a press release. “The Cherokee Nation is committed to growing the Oklahoma economy, helping reduce the nation's dependence on foreign oil and creating sustainable jobs for our people in the renewable energy sector.”

The tribes' partner in the project is PNE Wind USA.
