Chippewa Cree Tribe suspends two following theft indictment

The Chippewa Cree Tribe of Montana has suspended a council member and a business executive after they were indicted on theft charges.

Council member John "Chance" Houle and Tony Belcourt, the CEO of Chippewa Cree Construction Corp., are accused of stealing hundreds of thousands of dollars that was meant for the tribe. Four other people, including Belcourt's wife and another husband-wife couple, were also indicted.

"We ask for the support of the public, our tribal members and other government officials as we work through this difficult time in our tribe's history," the tribe said in a statement to the Associated Press.
