Utilities commission hears complaint against Crow Creek firm

The South Dakota Public Utilities Commission heard arguments in a telecommunications dispute involving the Crow Creek Sioux Tribe.

The tribe authorized Native American Telecom to do business on the reservation. The company began engaging in a practice known as traffic pumping, drawing a complaint from Sprint.

The Federal Communications Commission considers the practice to be legal but Sprint was charged high fees because the traffic was directed through the reservation.

Sprint wants the state commission to bar Native American Telecom from operating within South Dakota.
