Montana Senate passes bill to create tribal language program

The Montana Senate voted 44-6 to pass SB 342, a bill to create a tribal language pilot program, on Wednesday.
The bill sets aside $2 million for each of the state's eight tribes. They will be able to use the money to develop programs specific to their languages.
“If we don’t preserve what we have left, we won’t have anything left to immerse," Sen. Jonathan Windy Boy (D), a member of the Chippewa Tribe Tribe, said on the Senate floor, The Helena Independent Record reported.
The bill goes to the state House for consideration.
