Joe Burton, a member of the Soboba Band of Luiseno
Indians, is playing his final game for Oregon State University tonight.
Burton grew up on his reservation in southern California. He was the first member of his tribe to earn an athletic scholarship to a major university.
Four years later, the 6-foot-7 center is graduating with a degree in ethnic studies. ''I am going to miss the team and playing basketball with these guys," Burton told the Associated Press.
Burton has brushed shoulders with President Barack Obama and the First Family more than once during his college career.
The coach, Craig Robinson, is First Lady Michelle Obama's brother.
Robinson and his wife announced they are starting a scholarship fund for Native students in Burton's name.
