Billy Mills, a member of the Oglala Sioux Tribe of South Dakota, will receive the Citizens Medal at a White House ceremony today. Mills won the gold medal in the 10K race at the 1964 Olympics. He set a world record and remains the only American to win the gold in the event. "Mills co-founded and serves as the spokesman for Running Strong for American Indian Youth, an organization that supports cultural programs and provides health and housing assistance for Native American communities," the White House blog stated. The Citizens Medal is presented to Americans who have made a significant impact in their communities. The ceremony is scheduled to be webcast at 11:10am on http://www.whitehouse.gov/live.
