United Auburn Indian Community doesn't want land in trust

The United Auburn Indian Community of California has taken a controlling interest in a housing project but the tribe doesn't want the land placed in trust, a spokesperson said.

The tribe invested in a 277-acre development in the city of Auburn. City officials weren't aware of the tribe's involvement until recently.

"The tribe has absolutely no intention of having the land taken into trust by the federal government," spokesperson Doug Elmets told The Sacramento Bee, responding to fears that there are other plans for the site besides housing.

The tribe was restored to federal recognition through an act of Congress.
