Cherokee Nation Council passes bill for drug tests of officials

The Cherokee Nation Council passed a bill that requires all elected officials to undergo drug tests.

The bill applies to the the principal chief, the deputy chief and the council itself. Tribal employees already undergo drug tests.

“I work for the Cherokee Nation people, and the people should know whether you pass a drug test or not,” council member David Thornton said at a meeting, The Cherokee Phoenix reported.

The Cherokee Nation must develop policies in order for the law to go into effect.
