EPA releases report on cleanup of uranium on Navajo Nation

The Environmental Protection Agency released a report about uranium cleanup efforts on the Navajo Nation.

The EPA has spent more than $100 million over the past five years to address the highest priority sites on the reservation. The report said 34 contaminated homes were remediated and nine abandoned mines were stabilized or cleaned up.

Addiitonally, the EPA said it conducted field assessments of 240 water supplies and 520 mines. That means it could take years and a lot more money to address the problem.

"The progress that has happened so far is mixed," Stephen Etsitty, te executive director of the Navajo Nation Environmental Protection Agency, told The Farmington Daily Times.
