Cherokee Nation program helps elders with utility payments

The Cherokee Nation of Oklahoma is helping elders with utility payments.

The Elders In Need program helped about 1,200 elders pay their utility bills this past winter. Each received a $200 disbursement.

“They (elders) may have to choose between paying a utility bill or buying their medication,” Crystal Thomas, the Family Assistance assistant manager, told The Cherokee Phoenix. “We don’t want to see that happen. This helps put a little more money in their pocket so they can use it for other essential living needs that they have.”

Eligible elders can receive payments twice a year under the program.
