Fishing quotas have been cut in half for tribal and non-tribal fishermen in Minnesota due to declining runs of walleye.

Treaty fishermen will be allocated 72,250 pounds of walleye from Mille Lacs Lake. Non-tribal fishermen will get 178,750 pounds.

"The tribes are very concerned for the long-term health and sustainability of the lake,'' Sue Erickson, a spokesperson for the Great Lakes Indian Fish and Wildlife Commission, told The Minneapolis Star Tribune. "The mortality has to be reduced from all sources.''

Ojibwe tribes retain off-reservation fishing rights through their treaties.
