Shawn Atleo wins re-election to lead Assembly of First Nations

Shawn Atleo of the Ahousaht First Nation in British Columbia won re-election as national chief of the Assembly of First Nations.

After three rounds of balloting, Atleo secured 341 votes -- just enough to claim victory. He will serve a second three-year term as head of the most representative First Nations organization in Canada.

“Going forward, I reflect back to what the ancestors remind us of, we are stronger together,” Atleo said at AFN's annual meeting, APTN reported.

Atleo's closest challenger in terms of votes was Pam Palmater of the Eel River Bar First Nation in New Brunswick. He said he will continue to call for a national inquiry into missing and murdered Native women.
