DOI extends comment period for Cobell land consolidation

The Interior Department has extended the comment period on a plan to implement the land consolidation portion of the Indian trust fund settlement.

The Cobell Land Consolidation Program Draft Plan was released in February. It offers ways to reduce fractionation in Indian Country through voluntary land purchases.

The settlement provides $1.9 billion for the purchases, although DOI is allowed to take an 15 percent administrative fee. The money is supposed to be spent in 10 years.

Comments on the plan are being accepted until April 3.
