County rejects quarry mine near Pechanga Band sacred site

The board of supervisors in Riverside County, California, voted 3-2 against a controversial quarry mine that was opposed by the Pechanga Band of Luiseño Indians.

The Liberty Quarry mine would have been located less than 500 yards from the reservation. The tribe said the project would have destroyed the sacred Pu`eska Mountain.

“We think they made the correct moral decision,” Chairman Marc Macarro told The Riverside Press-Enterprise.

The project generated significant controversy among county residents, many of whom opposed it. But other groups, including labor unions, supported it, citing job creation.
