Indian woman spared from death penalty under race bias law

A judge in North Carolina spared Christina Walters, a woman reported to be of Lumbee and Cherokee ancestry, under the state's Racial Justice Act.

Walters was convicted of killing two White women and shooting an African-American woman as part of gang initiation in 1998. The judge said racial bias played a role during the jury selection and the trial.

Walters will remain in prison for life, without the possibility of parole.
