Mescalero Apache Tribe urged to share $33M trust settlement

The Mescalero Apache Tribe of New Mexico is being urged to distribute a $33 million trust fund settlement on a per capita basis.

The issue was brought up at a general council meeting last week. Joseph Geronimo said there was support for the idea but he hasn't heard back from the tribal council.

"No one responded to me on the Council,” Geronimo told The Albuquerque Journal. “This is tyranny.”

The tribe has about 4,800 members. Geronimo said each could receive $5,000 from the settlement.
