Deadline nearing for claims in residential school settlement

Former students have until September 19 to file claims for a share of Indian Residential Schools Settlement Agreement.

The settlement was structured into two components. The Common Experience Program offered money to all students of residential schools and paid out $1.6 billion before it ended.

The Independent Assessment Process provides additional money for students who can document instances of physical, mental or sexual abuse. Some $1.5 billion has already been distributed.

Thousands of claims are still being processed and there are still potential applicants out there. "We do not want people to be shut out," Daniel Ish, the chief adjudictor for abuse claims, told CBC News.
