SCIA to consider three bills before land-into-trust hearing

The Senate Indian Affairs Committee will hold a business meeting this afternoon prior to a hearing on the U.S. Supreme Court decisions in Carcieri v. Salazar and Salazar v. Patchak.

Three bills are on the agenda. They are:
S. 675, the Native Hawaiian Government Reorganization Act of 2011. The bill extends the policy of self-determination to Native Hawaiians.
S.1345, the Spokane Tribe of Indians of the Spokane Reservation Grand Coulee Dam Equitable Compensation Settlement Act. The bill compensates the Spokane Tribe of Washington for land that was taken by the federal government.
S.1684, the Indian Tribal Energy Development and Self-Determination Act Amendments of 2011. The bill aims to make it easier for tribes to develop their lands.

The business meeting starts at 2:15pm and will be immediately followed by the hearing on the land-into-trust decisions.
