New Mexico Republican staying in post after Custer joke email

A Republican National Committeeman who angered tribal leaders in New Mexico by bringing up George Armstrong Custer looks to be staying in his post.

In an email, attorney Pat Rogers forwarded a news report of a meeting between tribal leaders and Gov. Susana Martinez (R). He said Martinez's Republican opponent in the primary wouldn't have "dishonored Col. Custer in this manner.”

Martinez denounced the comments, as did New Mexico Republican Party Chairman Monty Newman. Allen Weh, who was Martinez's opponent, also chimed in.

“As governor, Susana Martinez should be meeting with the leadership of all New Mexico constituencies," Weh said in a statement, The Albuquerque Journal reported.

All Indian Pueblo Council Chairman Chandler Sanchez called for Rogers to step down from his party post but it looks like he isn't going anywhere. Rogers said he was sorry if he offended anyone.
