Southwestern Association of Indian Arts to find new director

The Southwestern Association of Indian Arts, the group behind the popular Santa Fe Indian Market, will be looking for a new executive director.

The SWAIA board voted yesterday, the day after this year's event ended, not to renew the contract of Bruce Bernstein, a non-Indian who joined the organization in 2007. His current contract ends this November.

“I came to SWAIA to expand the reach and scope of our programming, and we’re now positioned and well-prepared for the next 100 years of Indian Market. I believe my work is done and ready to be handed to the person," Bernstein said in a statement to The Santa Fe New Mexican.

Bernstein recently published Santa Fe Indian Market: A History of Native Arts and the Marketplace, a book about the market, under his name.
