The Pechanga Band of Luiseño Indians in California continues to fight a controversial mine near a sacred site.

At a public hearing on Tuesday, Chairman Mark Macarro urged the Riverside County Commission to reject a newly submitted permit for the Liberty Quarry. The mine would be located less than 500 miles from the reservation border.

Despite opposition from the tribe and residents, the commission voted 3-2 to fast track the new permit, which is a scaled-down version of one that the county reject earlier this year.
