The 11th annual
Lori Piestewa National Native American Games
were held over the weekend in Arizona.
The event drew a large number of athletes, organizers said. The basketball tournament alone saw 132 teams, up from 96 last year.
The games were hosted by the
Fort McDowell Yavapai Nation
and the
Salt River Pima-Maricopa Community
, as well as the city of Fountain Hills.
The event was started in honor of Lori Piestewa, a Hopi woman who was killed during the war in Iraq in March 2003.
