Inaugural First Stewards conference held at NMAI in DC this week

Hundreds of tribal leaders and environmental advocates are meeting in Washington, D.C., this week for the inaugural First Stewards conference.

The event is being held at the National Museum of the American Indian. It focuses on environmental issues affecting tribes and indigenous people in coastal areas.

“We need everyone engaged in working on adaptations, mitigation and strategies and solutions to climate change,” Micah McCarty, the chairman of the Makah Nation and the First Stewards steering committee, told The Peninsula Daily News.

The conference runs Tuesday through Friday.
