Cahto Tribe working on contract to manage operations at park

The Cahto Tribe is in negotiations to manage a state park in California.

The tribe has a connection to the Westport Union Landing State Park. Chairman Richard “Joe” Smith says fishing and gathering have taken place there for generations.

“It's one of our aboriginal territories,” Smith told The Santa Rosa Press-Democrat.

The tribe's involvement will save the park from closing due to state budget cuts. Tribes in Oklahoma and Arizona have taken similar steps to preserve state parks of historical and cultural significance.
