Gladys A. Widdiss, an elder of the Aquinnah
Wampanoag Tribe of Massachusetts, died on Wednesday. She was 97.
Widdiss led her tribe from 1978 to 1987. Her tenure culminated with a land claim settlement and federal recognition.
Widiss, who also served as vice chair, remained active in tribal affairs. She was known as a skilled potter and keeper of the tribe's history.
