North Dakota voters support retirement of 'Fighting Sioux' nick

Voters overwhelmingly supported a referendum to retire the University of North Dakota "Fighting Sioux" nickname and logo.

Members of the Spirit Lake Dakotah Nation campaigned to keep the name. But voters in every county except one voted to end the controversy, The Grand Forks Herald reported.

In Sioux County, which is home to the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe, the majority voted to retire the nickname. The tribe officially opposes the "Fighting Sioux."
